Lavanya Yohanathan, M.D.
Dr. Yohanathan specializes in benign and malignant disease involving the liver, pancreas and biliary tree. She did her General Surgery residency training at University of Toronto, Canada. Following this, she spent 4 years at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where she completed two years of a Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB)Surgery Fellowship followed by two years of a Multi-Organ Abdominal Transplant Surgery Fellowship with a focus on liver transplantation for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (Mayo Protocol) and with an interest in treatment sequencing of liver metastases from colorectal cancer, neuroendocrine tumors and transplant oncology.
Dr. Yohanathan is passionate about rational and evidence-based treatment strategies to improve patient-centered oncological outcomes. She is highly involved in the Americas Hepato-Panctreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA) and the Hepatobiliary Subcommittee of the Society of Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (DDW) and the HPB working group for the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO). In addition, Dr. Yohanathan is active on national committees. She is also a member of the ALLIANCE GI surgery group and HPB Surgery working group wherein she develops clinical trials for hepatobiliary oncology patients centered around strategies to increase rates of curative intent surgical resection through treatment sequencing. Dr. Yohanathan is the institutional PI of two clinical trials involving neoadjuvant chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer versus upfront resection as well as pancreatic cyst surveillance. She has a keen interest in expanding the role of clinical trials for our unique patient population.
